anxiety

Anxiety is a state of persistent fear and anticipation that shows up as worry, bodily tension, and restlessness. In therapy, it is viewed as both a protective alarm and a pattern of thoughts and sensations that can escalate into panic or perseveration.

It stems from the nervous system's threat response and is shaped by stress, trauma, and early attachment experiences. Common patterns include racing thoughts, muscle tightness, sleep disturbance, irritability, and avoidance. Clinical perspectives map triggers, cognitive loops, and somatic cues to clarify what the anxiety is signaling and to support nervous system regulation and a greater sense of safety.
