authenticity
Authenticity is the alignment between inner experience and outward expression—a felt sense of genuineness or realness. In therapy, it means recognizing and voicing feelings, needs, and values without pretense.
Rooted in humanistic psychology, it is linked to congruence and genuineness, and is viewed as a marker of psychological health. After trauma, protective roles like people-pleasing, perfectionism, or "fawning" can hide the self; recovery often involves noticing these patterns, tolerating vulnerability, and acting from one's values. Authentic relating supports clear boundaries, self-trust, and more secure connection with others.
