avoidant attachment
Avoidant attachment is an insecure attachment style marked by emotional distance, strong self-reliance, and discomfort with closeness. In therapy and emotional healing, it describes a relational pattern where intimacy feels risky, so needs and feelings are minimized.
Rooted in attachment theory, the insecure-avoidant or dismissive-avoidant pattern often forms when early caregiving discouraged expressions of need. Common signs include withdrawing under stress, downplaying vulnerability, and appearing independent while suppressing emotion. In clinical work, it is understood as a protective strategy; treatment focuses on building safe connection, tolerating closeness, and expanding the capacity for trust and mutual support.
