childhood emotional neglect (cen)
Childhood Emotional Neglect (CEN) is the ongoing absence of caregiver attunement to a child’s feelings and emotional needs. It is an omission—emotional deprivation or misattunement—rather than overt abuse.
It often develops in well‑intentioned but emotionally unavailable families where feelings are minimized or ignored. Over time, it can affect identity and relationships, showing up as numbness, alexithymia, chronic shame, perfectionism, people‑pleasing, or difficulty trusting closeness. In therapy, CEN is understood as a developmental or relational trauma—an attachment injury—with care centered on emotional awareness, naming needs, validation, and repairing patterns of connection.
