counseling
Counseling is a supportive relationship in which a trained professional helps a person explore problems, feelings, and goals in a structured, confidential setting. It overlaps with psychotherapy and is often used interchangeably, though counseling can lean toward shorter-term, issue-focused work.
Counselors draw on a range of approaches—such as talk therapy, CBT, solution-focused work, grief work, and trauma-informed care—tailored to each client. Common focus areas include relationship stress, life transitions, anxiety, depression, grief, career issues, and family conflict. The heart of counseling is the working alliance: a safe, non-judgmental space where a person can be honest, feel understood, and develop new ways of relating to themselves and others.
