family support
Family support refers to the emotional, practical, and relational backing a family can offer its members during stress, growth, or crisis. In therapy, it is understood as a significant protective factor—when present—and as a meaningful absence when it is not.
Healthy family support includes being listened to without judgment, help with practical needs, encouragement toward autonomy, and repair after rupture. In dysfunctional or enmeshed systems, "support" can become conditional, controlling, or entangled with guilt and obligation. Clinical work explores what support actually looks like in a person's family of origin, how that shaped expectations, and how to build a broader chosen network of people who can provide what the original family could not.
