forgiveness
Forgiveness is the process of releasing resentment, bitterness, or the wish for retribution after being wronged. In therapy, it is understood as an internal journey—not a requirement to reconcile, forget, or minimize what happened.
Forgiveness is often misunderstood as quick, moralistic, or spiritual bypass. Healthy forgiveness, by contrast, tends to follow grief and anger—not precede them. It may or may not involve contact with the person who caused harm, and it can coexist with firm boundaries, including no contact.
