gray rock
The gray rock method is a strategy for interacting with emotionally abusive, narcissistic, or high-conflict people when no-contact isn't possible (for example, with a co-parent or coworker). The idea is to become as unresponsive and uninteresting as a gray rock—offering no emotional reactions, no personal information, and no fuel for the other person's manipulation or drama.
In practice, gray rocking means keeping conversations short, factual, and boring; avoiding arguments; and refusing to react to provocation. It is a protective tactic, not a long-term relational style—it can be emotionally draining and isn't meant to replace healing or, ideally, limiting exposure to the harmful person. Used intentionally, though, it can reduce conflict and help a person preserve their energy while they plan safer next steps.
