humor
Humor is a complex human capacity that can serve very different roles in trauma and mental health. At its best, humor is a tool for connection, perspective, and resilience—a way to make hard truths bearable, share relief with others, and lighten the nervous system when life feels heavy. Trauma survivors often have a finely tuned sense of dark humor, born from the need to find oxygen inside difficult experiences.
Humor can also become a defense. Self-deprecating jokes, constant clowning, or punchlines that deflect every serious moment can keep pain safely out of reach—and keep others at a safe distance too. Honest work with humor means honoring its gifts while noticing when it's being used to avoid feelings, seeking connection, or naming something real that can't yet be said straight.
