invalidation
Invalidation is the experience of having your feelings, perceptions, or needs denied, minimized, or dismissed by another person. It can sound like "You're overreacting," "That never happened," "Stop crying," or simply a blank stare when you try to share something real. Invalidation is one of the most corrosive relational experiences, especially when it comes from people whose job it is to love and see you.
Chronic childhood invalidation teaches people to distrust their own inner experience. Survivors often grow up unsure whether their feelings are real, whether their memories are accurate, or whether they have the right to want anything at all. Healing from invalidation involves slowly reconnecting with your body's signals, having your experience reflected back by safe others, and learning to say, "Yes—this happened, and it mattered."
