mindfulness
Mindfulness is the practice of paying attention, on purpose, to the present moment with an attitude of openness and nonjudgment. Rooted in contemplative traditions and translated into secular psychology, mindfulness has become a core ingredient in therapies for anxiety, depression, chronic pain, and trauma. It is less about emptying the mind and more about noticing what is actually happening—in body, breath, thoughts, and emotions—without needing to fix or flee it.
For trauma survivors, mindfulness can be a double-edged sword. Present-moment awareness helps interrupt rumination, flashbacks, and automatic reactivity—but it can also surface distress that feels overwhelming if it comes too quickly. Trauma-informed mindfulness builds safety first: small doses, grounded practices, anchors in the body, and permission to step out of any practice that is too much.
