parenting
Parenting is the ongoing work of caring for, guiding, and raising a child from infancy through adulthood. From a trauma-informed perspective, the most important ingredients are not technique but presence—being attuned, warm, consistent, and willing to repair when things go wrong. Children don't need perfect parents; they need parents who keep showing up and take responsibility for their impact.
For adults who did not experience this kind of parenting themselves, raising children can surface old grief, triggers, and unmet needs. Many survivors describe parenting as both a profound gift and a confronting mirror—an invitation to heal their own history so they don't hand it forward. Support, therapy, and education about child development often become essential tools in breaking inherited patterns.
