physical abuse
Physical abuse is any deliberate use of force that causes, or is intended to cause, bodily harm. It includes hitting, slapping, kicking, shoving, choking, burning, throwing objects at someone, and other forms of violence.
The harm of physical abuse is rarely only physical. It teaches nervous systems that unpredictable danger can come from the very people who are supposed to provide care. Survivors often carry lasting effects including complex PTSD, hypervigilance, shame, and difficulty trusting safe bodies and hands. Healing generally requires safety first, then trauma-informed therapy, somatic work, and supportive relationships.
