safety
Safety in therapy is the felt sense of security—emotional, physical, and relational—that lets a person relax enough to explore painful experiences. Without feeling safe, meaningful trauma work cannot begin.
Safety develops through predictable settings, clear boundaries, choice and consent, confidentiality, and an attuned, nonjudgmental relationship. These cues signal to the nervous system that threat has passed, support regulation and connection, and expand the window of tolerance. It is not the absence of discomfort, but a reliable sense of protection while engaging difficult material.
