boundaries

Boundaries are the limits that define what is and isn't acceptable in one's emotional, physical, and relational space. In therapy, they mark personal autonomy and are communicated through assertiveness, consent, and clear expectations.

Boundaries can be flexible, rigid, or porous, shaped by family dynamics, attachment, culture, and trauma. Common patterns include crossing boundaries, enmeshment, people-pleasing, and chronic over-responsibility; violations often bring resentment, confusion, or burnout. Therapeutic conversations often map boundary domains—emotional, physical, sexual, time, digital, and financial—to clarify roles and limits and to support safety and self-respect.
