catharsis
Catharsis is the emotional release that happens when pent-up feelings are expressed, bringing a sense of relief or unburdening. In therapy, it means the discharge or unblocking of grief, anger, fear, or shame in a safe, contained setting.
The idea goes back to Aristotle's notion of purification in tragedy and to early psychoanalysis, where Breuer and Freud described "abreaction" or the cathartic method. Today it is viewed as one element of healing: expression can relieve pressure, but lasting change comes when the release is integrated with insight, regulation, and new meaning. Catharsis may appear through crying, storytelling, writing, breath, art, or movement, and is often paced to stay within tolerable limits. Venting alone can feel relieving yet may not shift underlying patterns; processing and integration are key.
