co-dependents anonymous (coda)
CoDA, short for Co-Dependents Anonymous, is a twelve-step fellowship for people working to develop and maintain healthy, functional relationships. Founded in 1986, it adapts the traditions of Alcoholics Anonymous to the specific relational patterns associated with codependency.
Members explore how early family dynamics—such as enmeshment, neglect, or caretaking roles—shaped their sense of self in connection with others. Through shared stories, step work, and sponsorship, participants learn to set limits, honor their own needs, and move out of recurring cycles of control, compliance, or self-abandonment.
The approach treats recovery as an ongoing practice: noticing old relational patterns, taking personal responsibility, and cultivating emotional honesty as the foundation for healthier connection with self and others.
