emotionally stunted
Emotionally stunted describes someone whose emotional development has lagged behind their chronological age, often due to trauma, neglect, addiction, or growing up in an emotionally immature family. It is a descriptive term rather than a diagnosis and is common in trauma and family-systems work.
Adults who are emotionally stunted may struggle to identify or express feelings, tolerate vulnerability, take responsibility in relationships, or move through conflict without collapsing, raging, or withdrawing. Underneath is usually a younger self that never had the safety, modeling, or reflection needed to grow relational skills. Clinical work is compassionate and developmental: building emotional vocabulary, practicing regulation, repairing attachment ruptures, and allowing the inner child to finally do the growing up that could not happen earlier.
