flying monkeys
Flying monkeys is a term borrowed from The Wizard of Oz and used in family-systems and narcissistic-abuse recovery to describe people who act on behalf of a harmful individual—often the narcissist—to pressure, manipulate, or punish a target. They may be siblings, friends, extended family, or clergy.
Flying monkeys are frequently recruited through partial information, guilt, or emotional alliance, and may genuinely believe they are “helping.” Common behaviors include delivering messages, interrogating the target about their choices, minimizing the original harm, or demanding reconciliation. For those who have stepped back from a toxic family, encountering flying monkeys can be destabilizing. Clinical work supports recognizing the dynamic, maintaining boundaries without over-explaining, and protecting one’s own peace without getting drawn into re-litigation.
