functioning
In mental health, "functioning" refers to how well a person is able to meet the demands of daily life—work, relationships, self-care, and emotional regulation—despite any psychological struggles they may be carrying. Clinicians often distinguish between high-functioning individuals, who appear successful on the outside while masking significant inner pain, and lower-functioning individuals whose symptoms visibly disrupt daily life.
For trauma survivors, "high functioning" can be both a strength and a trap: the same perfectionism, people-pleasing, and hypervigilance that earn praise can also keep people cut off from their own needs and feelings. Honest therapy invites clients to look past external functioning and ask how they are actually doing inside.
