intimacy

Intimacy is the experience of being deeply known by another person while still feeling safe to be yourself. True intimacy goes beyond physical closeness or time spent together—it involves mutual vulnerability, honesty about feelings, and the willingness to show up for each other's inner worlds, including the messy parts.

For people raised in homes where emotional honesty was unsafe, intimacy can feel both longed for and terrifying. Letting someone see you clearly may trigger old fears of rejection, engulfment, or betrayal. Building intimacy as an adult often means learning to regulate your nervous system in close relationships, sharing in manageable doses, and slowly proving to yourself that vulnerability with the right people leads to connection, not collapse.
