navigate

"Navigate," in the context of trauma and family work, refers to the skill of consciously moving through complicated relationships and situations without getting swept away by old patterns. Navigating a narcissistic parent, a difficult holiday gathering, or a hard conversation isn't about passivity—it's about choosing how to engage, where to set limits, and when to exit, based on your values and your nervous system's capacity.

Learning to navigate hard relational terrain is a central recovery skill. It includes preparing in advance, noticing when you're getting hooked, using grounding tools in the moment, and debriefing afterward with support. Over time, navigating becomes less exhausting as new responses become second nature.
