needy

"Needy" is a loaded word that's often used as an accusation, especially toward people with attachment wounds who reach for reassurance, closeness, or care. In many dysfunctional families, having needs at all was treated as a burden—so adults who grew up in those systems may be both deeply needy and deeply ashamed of their own needs.

In a trauma-informed view, neediness isn't a character flaw. It's a signal that a real need isn't being met—for safety, attention, closeness, or reassurance. Healing involves validating the need rather than shaming it, learning to meet some needs internally, and building relationships where expressing needs is welcomed rather than punished.
