overwhelm
Overwhelm is the experience of having more input—emotional, sensory, cognitive, relational—than one's system can process in the moment. The nervous system tips into a state of too-muchness, and the usual tools (clear thinking, good choices, emotional regulation) become temporarily unavailable.
For trauma survivors, overwhelm happens more easily and more often, because the nervous system is already carrying unresolved stress. Overwhelm can look like shutting down, bursting into tears, raging, freezing, or numbing out. Healing involves learning to recognize early signs, slowing down before the system tips, building daily practices that reduce baseline load, and giving oneself permission to rest and say no.
