perfectionism

Perfectionism is the relentless pursuit of flawlessness, often paired with harsh self-criticism and fear of failure. On the outside it can look like high standards and achievement; on the inside it usually feels like never being enough, no matter what is accomplished. Perfectionism drives people to overwork, avoid risks, and measure themselves against impossible benchmarks.

For trauma survivors, perfectionism is frequently a protective strategy learned in childhood: if I am perfect, I will be loved, safe, and not criticized. It is less about excellence and more about earning the right to exist. Healing involves separating self-worth from performance, embracing "good enough," and learning that rest and imperfection do not make you unlovable.
