identity
Identity is the sense of who you are—your values, preferences, history, beliefs, and the felt understanding of yourself as a continuous person over time. A stable identity lets you move through the world with a clear inner "yes" and "no," make choices aligned with what matters to you, and weather others' opinions without losing yourself.
Trauma, especially chronic relational trauma in childhood, often disrupts identity formation. When children must mold themselves to caregivers' moods and needs, they may grow into adults who struggle to know what they like, want, or feel. Healing identity involves slowing down enough to listen inward, permitting preferences and opinions, and gradually building a self that belongs to you rather than to the people you had to survive.
