impulsiveness

Impulsiveness describes a tendency to act quickly on urges, emotions, or thoughts without pausing to consider the consequences. It can show up in everything from snap decisions and overspending to lashing out verbally, substance use, and risky behaviors. Everyone is impulsive sometimes, but chronic impulsiveness often signals an underregulated nervous system or an overwhelmed inner world.

In trauma survivors, impulsive behavior is frequently an attempt to discharge unbearable feelings quickly rather than sit with them. Conditions like ADHD, complex PTSD, and emotional dysregulation often include impulsiveness as a core feature. Working with impulsiveness usually involves building the pause between trigger and action—through nervous system regulation, therapy, and practices that increase tolerance for difficult emotions.
