narcissism
Narcissism exists on a spectrum, from everyday self-focus to the clinical diagnosis of narcissistic personality disorder (NPD). At its core, narcissism involves a fragile sense of self that is propped up by external validation, admiration, and control. Beneath the confident exterior, there is often deep shame, emptiness, and an inability to tolerate criticism or imperfection.
In relationships, narcissism shows up as a lack of empathy, a need to feel superior, and a tendency to use others to regulate the narcissist's own inner state. Family systems shaped by a narcissistic parent or partner often feature walking-on-eggshells, favoritism, gaslighting, and a pervasive sense that love must be earned by performing. Understanding narcissism helps survivors stop blaming themselves and start making informed choices about contact, distance, and healing.
