disorganized
In therapy, “disorganized” describes a state where emotions, thoughts, or behavior lack a stable, coherent structure and often feel chaotic. Most often it refers to disorganized attachment: a push–pull between seeking closeness and fearing it.
In attachment theory, this pattern can develop when early caregiving is frightening or inconsistent. It can lead to contradictory or frozen responses and fragmented self-states. In later life it may appear as mixed signals in relationships, dissociation, or sudden shifts between approach and avoidance. Clinically, it often points to unresolved trauma and centers treatment on safety, regulation, and integration to make experience more coherent.
