magical thinking
Magical thinking is the belief that one's thoughts, words, or small actions can directly influence events in the outside world in ways that defy ordinary cause and effect—for example, believing that a bad thought caused a loved one's illness, or that a specific ritual can prevent harm. It is a normal part of early childhood development, but can persist into adulthood, especially after trauma.
In trauma survivors, magical thinking often develops as a way to regain a sense of control in situations where there was none. A child who could not protect themselves might have learned that if they "were good enough" or "thought the right things," bad things wouldn't happen. Healing involves gently separating responsibility from omnipotence and letting go of inherited rules the younger self invented to feel safe.
