parentification
Parentification is the dynamic in which a child is placed in the role of caregiver—for a parent, a sibling, or the household as a whole—taking on emotional or practical responsibilities that belong to adults. It can be instrumental (cooking, managing bills, physical caregiving) or emotional (being a parent's confidant, therapist, or emotional regulator).
Parentified children often grow up to be highly capable, responsible adults who are praised for being "mature for their age"—while carrying a hidden grief about the childhood they never got. They may struggle with over-functioning, resentment, difficulty receiving care, and identities built around being useful to others. Healing involves recognizing what happened, grieving it, and learning to be cared for without guilt.
