journaling

Journaling is the practice of writing down your thoughts, feelings, and experiences, typically in a notebook or digital document, as a tool for self-understanding and healing. It can take many forms—free writing, prompted reflection, gratitude lists, letters you never send—and does not require any particular skill or structure to be useful.

In trauma work, journaling can help externalize overwhelming inner experiences, slow down reactive thinking, and make patterns visible over time. Writing about difficult memories and feelings in a safe, contained way has been shown in research to support emotional processing and nervous system regulation. Journaling works best when paired with the rest of a life that includes support—it is a companion to therapy and community, not a substitute for them.
