manipulation
Manipulation is the attempt to influence another person's behavior, feelings, or decisions through indirect, dishonest, or coercive means rather than open communication. Common manipulative tactics include guilt-tripping, playing the victim, silent treatment, triangulation, flattery used as a hook, and selectively hiding or distorting information.
In unhealthy family systems and abusive relationships, manipulation often runs so deeply that targets may not recognize it—they simply feel confused, anxious, or inexplicably "wrong." Healing often begins with naming the behavior for what it is, trusting one's gut, and practicing direct, honest communication as both a personal standard and a relational filter. Over time, this helps survivors move away from manipulators and toward people capable of mutual, transparent connection.
